Montclair Blues Hockey Club - League Update for the 2026–27 Season

For more than six decades, the Montclair Hockey Club has served the local hockey community with a simple guiding principle: make decisions that best support our players, player’s families, and the long-term health of the Montclair Blues Hockey Club program. Founded in 1963, the Club has evolved alongside the youth hockey landscape while remaining grounded in development, sportsmanship, and community.

As part of that responsibility, the Board of Directors recently completed a comprehensive review of league options for the upcoming season and beyond. After careful consideration, the Club has decided that the Montclair Blues will compete in the Atlantic Hockey Federation (AHF) beginning with the 2026–27 season.

How We Reached This Decision

This decision followed an extended evaluation process conducted by the Board. We reviewed multiple pathways and assessed a wide range of factors, including:

• Travel demands and geographic footprint
• Competitive alignment across age and skill levels
• Depth and diversity of opponents within a league structure
• Overall season organization and predictability

After weighing these considerations, the Board concluded that the AHF offers the most balanced and forward-looking environment for the Montclair Blues Hockey Club. We believe this structure provides meaningful competition while supporting player development and offering families greater clarity and consistency throughout the season.

Our History and Identity Remain Intact

While this represents a change in league affiliation, it does not represent a change in who we are.

Montclair Hockey Club remains an independent, non-profit organization, governed by its own Board, policies, and bylaws. Our mission, leadership structure, and day-to-day operations are unchanged.  The Club has proudly participated in the New Jersey Youth Hockey League (NJYHL) since its founding and values the role that league has played in Montclair’s history. This decision reflects a forward-looking assessment of today’s hockey environment rather than a departure from our roots.

Home Rink

The Montclair Blues will continue to call Montclair State University Ice Arena home. Our relationship with the facility remains unchanged. Families can expect the same home-ice experience they are accustomed to.

Looking Forward

Change within youth hockey is constant, and the Board takes seriously its responsibility to position the Montclair Blues for long-term stability and success. After careful review, we believe participation in the Atlantic Hockey Federation(AHF) best supports that goal while preserving the values and culture that have defined Montclair Hockey Club for generations.
