The NJYHL midget season that came to a close this past November may have been the Montclair Hockey Club's most successful one yet. Our club fielded 9 18U/16U teams consisting of over 150 players, marking our largest midget program to date.
Following the regular season, we had 5 teams advance to NJYHL post season play. 18 AA Blue, 16 AA Blue & 16 AA White qualified for playoffs as the first overall seeds in their respective divisions, while 18 AA White & 16 A Blue participated in play-in games.
18 AA Blue went 2-0 over the playoff weekend to earn the first seed in AAHA District Qualifiers in March. The boys downed Union Thunder 6-3 in the semi finals on Friday and won the league in a thrilling 6-4 victory over the New Jersey Colonials Saturday morning. Montclair and Flyers Youth advance from the NJYHL to the District tournament this spring.
16 AA Blue also went 2-0 in NJYHL playoffs to punch their ticket to AAHA District Qualifiers. The team needed 2 OT periods to knock off the Union Thunder 3-2 on Friday, while the offense exploded for a 9-0 win over Devils Youth en route to a league title. Montclair and Devils Youth advance to the District Tournament in March.
16 AA White went 1-0-2 on the weekend, playing overtime periods in each matchup. A 3-2 OT loss on Friday night needed late 3rd period magic, where the Blues scored off an o-zone face-off with 3 seconds in regulation. The boys were on the winning side of things when Trevor Rascher scored the game winner in overtime Saturday to take down the Jersey Wolves 3-2. Unfortunately luck ran out for the team when the New Jersey Colonials scored the OT game winner Sunday morning in a 4-3 game. It was an exciting and hard fought weekend for the boys for certain.
